The first plant I ever cared for at work was a snake plant. I remember cutting a small piece from a thriving one in our office and placing it in a glass of water on my desk. I wasn’t sure if it would grow, but within a few weeks, tiny roots started to appear. Watching it grow into a potted plant of its own was so satisfying, and it quickly became my favorite part of the workspace.

While plants brighten up the area, they can also transform your workspace into a healthier, happier place to spend your day. It improves air quality, boosts your mood, and helps keep you more productive as well. They are the ultimate low-maintenance coworkers (and they never steal your lunch!).

Here are top five office plants that are perfect for creating a healthier work environment.

1. Snake Plant (Sansevieria)

You probably saw this one coming…I just had to put it as #1.

Known as the “plant of steel,” the snake plant is practically indestructible. It does really well on neglect, making it ideal for busy office workers who might forget to water it regularly. This plant is a natural air purifier, filtering toxins like formaldehyde and benzene while releasing oxygen—even at night!

Quick tip: Place a snake plant near your desk or in a common area to keep the air fresh and clean. Want to improve productivity? Check out our blog on Productivity in Co-Working Spaces for more workspace optimization tips.

2. Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)

The pothos, or “devil’s ivy,” is a versatile and forgiving plant that thrives in almost any light condition. Its trailing vines can add a cool, jungle-like vibe to your office, and it’s excellent at removing indoor air pollutants.

And…if you’re thinking of making a living wall, this would be a great plant to add to that.

Quick tip: Water only when the soil is dry. The vibrant green leaves will add so much life and colour to dull corners of your office space.

3. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)

The peace lily is not only beautiful but also a workhorse when it comes to improving air quality. It’s great for removing mold spores and allergens from the air, making it great for shared spaces or areas prone to dust.

Quick tip: Peace lilies prefer indirect light and slightly moist soil. Trust me when I say their striking white flowers can instantly improve your office decor.

4. ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)

The ZZ plant is super funky, cool, and sturdy. It has glossy green leaves that can survive well in low light and require minimal watering. It’s perfect for those who want to add a touch of green to the space without much effort.

Quick tip: Pair a ZZ plant with your Inbox Booth to create a calming, green space for focused work sessions.

5. Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)

Spider plants are classic favourites for offices due to their ability to thrive in a variety of conditions. They’re easy to care for and produce “babies” that can be propagated to share with coworkers, just like the snake plant!

Quick tip: Spider plants prefer bright, indirect light and occasional watering. They’re also excellent at absorbing carbon monoxide and other toxins.

Why Plants Matter in the Workplace

Studies have shown that incorporating plants into the workplace can lead to reduced stress, increased focus, and improved overall well-being. Whether you’re setting up a single plant on your desk or creating a green corner, the benefits are undeniable.
